Scenario: some beach in England. Kate is walking her dog and then she comes across a picnic basket, that’s washed up on shore, the beach is always isolated, so she wonders where has this come from! She inspects the basket, sees there's a bottle with a note in it and of course Kate reads it and it says “If you’re a woman aged between 18 – 35years, are bored and lonely and fancy a shag text me (Joe) on 0777777777. PS: Enjoy the goodies in the basket they’re for you” Kate takes the basket home, on New Year’s day she’s bored, and so texts back to that number ‘Thank you for the sweets’ The texts start going back and forth, he tells her the 'shag' bit was just a joke, she buys it, gosh he seems so great! And as is the norm in 2009, they add each other on Facebook, they both say they like what they see . Kate thinks he’s the most romantic guy, all that Message in a Bottle movie stuff, and so now they’re in a relationship and she can’t wait to find out what he has in-store for Valentine’s Day! This is not fiction!! Now, Kate is no way like moi, because for starters, I don’t have a dog and no intention of getting one, actually unlike the animals on Animal Farm I say ‘Two legs good, four legs bad’ Apologies to animal lovers! But I just don’t do pets. I wouldn’t see a random washed up on shore picnic basket and think ‘Ooooh, let me check what’s up’…You would see me doing a Usain Bolt, that even the dog would wonder what’s going on or maybe even run away from me… for I would think ‘unattended package, goodies and a note in a bottle’..Osama has come to get me and he’s left me a suicide note…As for taking the snacks home, it would depend, if they were Belgian chocolate and I had the dog with..err before I say this I apologise to the animal lovers..but I'd let the dog eat the Belgian choc first...Oh Gosh I'm so not coming back as a dog in my next life!! If I did get the courage or rather my insane curiosity to read that note, I’d laugh, put it back in the bottle and back to the sea..I wouldn’t want to know who sent it, why are they overly confident that some-one is going to text them back?what’s with the old school moves of sending a message in a bottle?and what disease do they want to spread…That’s just me! Yes, I confess I’m a cynic…nothing’s romantic about that whole ish..more like CREEPY..Am I being unromantic by dissecting the whole situation? Is it that I've been in London so long that I don't know what romance is?Am I alone here my dearies in thinking this ish is unromantic? What’s your definition of romantic? What’s over-rated? My definition of romantic is when a guys listens to my rambling ons about the things I like, what makes go awwww and then surprising me with it…like a hand-written letter, is one of the most romantic gift a man would give me, the blank cards where he writes the message, a night playing all my favourite games like Connect Four(even though I suck @ this game, my lil bro refuses to play Connect Four with me..yeah…lol..), Scrabble (the real game for those who remember my last post…lol),Monopoly, Sharades. A day spent at the fun-fair or go-karting, paint-balling. Romantic is Chari's emotional post to MissButttercup(<em>Miss B, I'm still waiting o..lol)I just think roses are just so blah…I don’t do roses!! Proposing on Valentine's Day doesn't have the awww-factor for me!! There are certain moments that I think money can’t buy, and I rather cling onto a pleasant memory than an expensive pair of shoes, don’t get me wrong, I’ll wear the shoes BUT will I have a smile everytime I choose to wear them??But I also work along ‘its not the thought alone that counts, but the effort that went into it!’Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts.

how very unromantic of you......u'd be surprised the guy in ur story could turn out to be actually cool.
romantic sturvs to me are doing things tht are outta this world,.....gushing about ur feelings if ur a tough guy....wen i least expect it.taking the initiative and arranging something iv always wanted to do but im afraid of trying.
tell me i'm first Shona!
I guess i'm not. :(
I too will say i'm a bit of a cynic. But i'm a hopless romantic and still have home for romance. There are things someone can do that u'd value more than money spent on u.
hmm! in naija romance is as dead as ever o! too many hustlers, no time to tend to the issues of the heart.
u got me laughing o! am sure curiosity would lead u to open and see what hiddeth there in that bottle. lol!
yay back in business
I will be damned if i ever fail to make the VIP section again on this blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Girl, I'm just like u o. I'll give the basket a wide berth and kee it moving. Also I don't do pets. Incidentally, my next defining moments post is just about that ;-)
I'm a home body for the most part, so romance to me might involve staying home. Breakfast in bed, listening to you talk (I'm not talkative. I'm better at listening) A night with some slow dancing, a movie, and a night of slow sensual loving, or crazy shagging, as the spirit leads. ;-)
i am a hopeless romantic BUT that message in a bottle doesnt press my buttons at all... Noooo, I'd be to skeptical to take it seriously...
Just love it when a man wil make an effort to make me smile. Little gestures, spending time. Talking and revealing each others minds is romance to me, lol... connecting! and when he actually remembers something i said and acts on it- major plus!
I cried when i was watching the Obamas' first dance last night..... gosh........ i want a man like that
back to romance...... a guy telling me I love you unexpectedly, remembering the lil things that matter to me.......
the most romantic thing was done by my last ex, last yr Valentine's day, i was in the states and i was whinning about how much i miss my house back in England and the smell etc...... since he had visited me before, he knew how my house smelled and what i used. he went to the Body shop at the mall, bought the candles and fragrance oils i used and lit them round his house. when i got there, all i could smel was my room back in London...... gosh, that was so sweet but hey, he's an arse now......... lol
I'm with you on the four legged beings! I've just never been able to stand animals, no offense to animal lovers, we once had a dog and i think that's the only animal i've been able to stick
Ok, to the topic of romance...something romantic to me is when i get a random sms from my husband telling me how much he loves me, a hand written card, a touch even when pple are there, flowers for no reason, doing things for me when i don't even ask...etc
They're just those little everyday things!
Romantic for me is me making eba while he washes the pots. lol
We did it yeahhhh
lol...Babe I feel u on giving the basket a wide berth....wouldn't want to be a number in Osama's book..
babe, I dont feel blogville the way I used to...
See that ish is not kosher babe! A basket on the beach with no one around? Someone might use it for bait to kidnap your over eager self! So I agree with you. Do you remember the sex and the city episode where Carrie got mad at Aiden because he didn't want to sleep with her in the first week and she thought it was because he wasn't attracted to her, come to find out he had rushed things in the past and he really liked her so he decided he wanted to wait to get to know her? That's romance peoples!
I actually feel sorry for guys these days because they watch the big romance movies and feel they have to match that to be romantic. When in fact all they ahve to do is pay attention and listen to your needs and hear what you want. Like Funms ex did he listened to her whining...lol...I kid I kid..then he decided to make her smile based on the info he had!
The kinda man that will send shit like that deserves the kinda woman that will reply to shit like that. My take Shona babe.
Romance - Is slow dancing to no music, making love slowly. Romance is teasing me gently and laughing with me. Romance is asking my advice about anything. Romance is being comfortable with only me. Romance is actually liking your partner. Sharing a glass of wine in the afternoon. Romance is a quick quikeee in the middle of the farm at 12 noon. Romance is knowing with him, I am home. Romance is buying me the complete set of the Vicar of Dibley instead of the latest Vuitton Bag. Romance is watching him sing off key when he thinks he his alone. Romance is waking up to him starring at me with a silly grin on his face. Romance is the little moments that only belongs to both of you.
I have one of those ugly handwritings- legendary i tell you, (i dropped out of medical skool). But funny enough coz handwriting has become extinct, ugly handwriting has greater value than the more dexterous hand. So in my travels i have developed a habit of sending handwritten post cards to my mum, sis, cuz and the missus. To my mum it just serves to confirm her fears- that i travel too much, a man my age should settle down and start a family, to my sis its a source of shear amusement and the missus is totally indifferent- she prefers a phone call. It’s my lil cousin (16) who finds postcards and handwriting totally romantic- she goes on and on about it. Moral of the story the younger they are the more romantic.....he he he
Most romantic moment... what quickly comes to mind is my second date with the missus. It was a sunny Saturday in London, the missus was doing her Saturday shopping in bond street. I accidently met her ( ye right!) and suggested we hang for lunch and take an afternoon stroll. She was in her scandals , floral gipsy dress no make-up and her hair was down. Before this, i had only seen her in power suits- so seeing her like this just made her so vulnerable and cute.
After lunch we walked aimlessly (ye right), until i suggested we pass through my friends’ at the mandarin oriental. You see i had organised an afternoon couple’s spa treatment at the in house spa at the Mandarin. The experience was something out of this world, we spend 5 hours together- drinking chai-i tea, sauna, getting oriental massages, facials and listening to soothing music. They did us good, and i reckon the missus was impressed...
Romantic to me right now would be a proposal from Idris Alba to me on one knee in a 5 star restaurant....
yes, that ish is sooooooooooooo romantic....I almost cry picturing it!!!
You know there would be NO way I would even be picking up any basket from anywhere I wouldnt even be going over to investigate...lol you and I are so alike.
Things that get me are things like when Men cook for you, write cards or text you to tell you they are thinking about you..im a simplicstic romantic..
I really cant define romantic.
Someone who listens & takes care of me will do.
i'm too cynical to express or experience romance
what aalways does it for me though is a man who makes every minute we spend together count
so long as we in STEPS.......
WE ARE IN SYNC WITH EACH OTHER
TALK TOGETHER
EAT TOGETHER
PRAY TOGETHER
AND *SLEEP* TOGETHER........
I believe ascribing an action or gesture as romantic totally depends on the way one sees it. What sounds romantic to some may sound ridiculous to others. For one, the picnic basket on the beach thing sounds romantic to me and I'm wondering if I should try it. I doubt if any Naija gurl would fall for that though. Nonetheless, I believe romantic gestures should never cease in relationships (pre or post) as this is what further strengthens such relationships. Little gifts, love notes, pecks here and there . . . it's all romantic and it works. It's cool to get creative as well. The best romantic gestures should come as a surprise to whoever it's directed at. That sure brings out the true expected reaction.
@Miz-Cynic...lol..heey let me stay unromantic and safe..lol...its always sweet when the ultra-tough guys spill out their feelings isn't it!!
@Tigeress - Sorry hon, even i thought u were bt MizC beat u to it!yeah romance cna't be priced sometimes...
@Isi- such a shame that Naija doesn't have romance...and its usually the lil things that count, maybe i should come and educated the men there..lol...
@MDM - Welldone!!U have ur title back as the president of the ShoV fan club!!
@Neffie - Yes o, one has to inspect a random abandoned package..shuu we aint no Poirots!
yeah indoor romantic moments and oooh the slow dancing to no music is just oooooh....gosh its been a while..lol...
@Audzz- yeah you are a hopeless romantic..lol..though a major plus for those who listen!!
@Funms - hmmm u whined him into getting you Bodyshop stuff...lol..i kid! That gesture was just awww so romantic, *note to self - Body shop for Funms...lol*
@WriteFreak - Yes! Four legs bad, two legs good!! Its the lil everyday things that make us go all mooshie inside!!
@Badderchic - LMAO...Only you would say that, but its true...lol!!
@Olamild - Yes indeed, WE DID!!
@Afro - Pretty please don't go!!
@K - u're so right somtimes the grand gestures don't give the same effect as the little things!!
@Temite - you're so spot on!
LOL@ a quickee in the middle of the farm...gosh what a show for the Napoleons, Squealers and Co..lol..yeah I have been remembering Animal Farm!!
@Supestar! - aint that sweet..m sure that's why she's still wiv ya!!
@Afro - even I would cry too...seeing Idris propose to some1 else (even though i love u boo)would still send me crying it would be both joy and pain...lol...
@Angel - Lol! so true hon! I too am a simplistic romantic!!
@OluwaDee - I hear you my sister!!
@ibiluv- even for the cynic those lil things and gestures are romantic enuff!!
Ha!
Silly as it sounds, I kept wondering if he ever cheated on Michelle and what the woman/women would be thinking at that point in time.
Cynic in the house! Living in Nigeria Romance has been MURDERED!
I do like the smallest things though- intent stares, kisses on the forehead, quiet time cuddling, kissing....
And roses smell like boo boo boo!
some people just dont attached any meaning to what some of us term romantic, but then, people are different.
some people dont find romantic what others find romantic, that is why we are all different people.
maybe its me, but im not a flower person at all o. surprisingly, cards are dearer to me than flowers. especially when i drink in the words.
if you voted for me version of single ladies got me in stitches!!! shona gurlll, lol
I wouldn't dream of touching a random basket on a beach o so I'm with you on that.
For women like me who grew up watching mostly romantic movies, and reading romance novels, you get spoiled for the real world and this can be very hard on a guy and is probably why many of them think they have to do huge romantic gestures (aka clichéd things like red roses or typical dinner and a move dates) to win the woman.
But to me, what is most romantic is those gestures that show the guy has invested time in getting to know me, things that show he listens to me and cares about doing what he can to make my life easier. This can be things like putting gas in my car when it's running low, or dusting snow off my car for me before work (I don't have a car sha, but I will one day in Jesus' name), sending me a text just because, any small gesture that shows that he's in tune with my needs and wants to make me happy.
Naturally I would do the same for him :)
Ok, I'm all for romance and mushiness but that message in a bottle is a NO NO for me. What! in this day and age?? lol
Romantic:
Little things... paying attention to ur partner's needs.. E.g my Mr knows me so well that whenever he senses that I'm tired he'll rub my feet, back or offer to give me a massage without being asked... breakfast in bed... pleasant surprises just because... little unexpected notes to say I love u... the list is endless darling.
I'm catching up on my reading Chyna! How's my number one noction? LOL
Dude this old man just rolled past me on my way to work today and hollered "zvine sex mukati"... Black refuses to tell me what it means he says I must research....
As for romance you know my story man! and a basket with a number, thats just creepy...
missed your blog xxx
I'm not a cynic when it comes to love ,but romance? m patheticly arcaic.i do think the flowers are very romantic, not a truck load, just one,a box of my favourite chocolates, and a note saying how you feel, preferably hand written, any other addition will be great.
Lol@what you'd do with the basket.
i'd suspect it of containing "otumokpo" then i'd just leave it for anyone curious enough to open it.lol
the message in a bottle is romantic, but i wont be eating the food in the basket sha.
romantic is just those small little things that other people seemingly overlook. helping me with the dishes while i cook, spooning while we watch a movie, getting me the one thing ive been longing for without me telling him, etc.
this what i call a blog girl, happy to see the laziness fade away. Romance ,what romance?,
peace , love and harmony xx
That story was not romantic..scary yes...stalkerish..yes! we live in such a word where things like that are not acceptable!
Romance for me is having someone do the little things that show they care. Like making me breakfast in bed or a surprise homemade dinner after a long and tiring week. Anything that has to do with good surprises are romantic to me!
i love connect four!!!! it's been ages i played it. can we play together :)
the little things/thoughts count a lot
@Sirius - yeah I don't like the smell of roses too!!Hmmm i think if Obama had cheated on Michelle those woman/women would have run to the tabloids during his campaign...I actually was thinking of those that broke up wiv him before Michelle..lol...
@Uzezi - yeah i guess they are different...but looking at these comments it seems the general consesus is the lil things that mean the most...
@Audzz - glad u liked it gurl!!
@GNG - Yes o you will have a car!!!
Its so true guys think its the grand gestures shown in the movies that should be shown to women, but we really want the simply things, the sweet things!!
@Aijay- yes hon that is straight up crazy!!yeah the 'i love you' notes definitely would make me smile!!
@Bondgirl - yeah top noction m good..lol..gurl u keep my Goffal lingo in check..lol...ok 'zvine sex mukati' means there's sex involved..hmmm what were u n Black doing???..lol...and yup I know Black is Mr Romantic of the year..so jealous!!
@Marjoram - unfortunately i don't do flowers..sigh..ok if they really had to lilies and sunflowers only..nothing more!! and whats 'otumokpo'?
@Bumight - i just doubt the whole message in the bottle and the basket too..lol..oooh spooning whilst watching a movie or a football game..oooh wee!!
@Mr Luvable - yeah finally got to post..m just lazy these days blame it on the weather!!
@Ms O. - I'm so with you gurl!!that story is so scary and so not safe!! the little things = romantic and yeah surprises!!
@Aloted - yes hon lets play, i'll come over and u can beat me at it..lol!!!
i love my shona!!!!!!!!!!! i'm so in sync with this post! I DONT DO PETS AT ALL!!!!! as a matter of fact the only pet i can ever admire would be fishes in the aquarium! gosh! lol you are so funny with osama! girl u r so ghetto! lol
@I lurv u 2 Miss Love!!!..ouch@me being ghetto..lol...but hey i just don't do pets and thankfully i havent dated any1 with pets otherwise it would have been a disaster..lol..
btw what u doing up @ this time..u're meant to be out!!
u have mii laughing
romantic s not bottle on the beach..lol..
i think those lil things that we do everyday to and for those we truly love defines romantic..
what about women over 35.........
LOL
If it makes you feel any better, Osama doesn't leave suicide notes when he comes to get people; he just usually bombs them. Hahaha.
Romantic? Hmmm. I agree a proposal on Val's Day is so errr. The simplest, personal, well thought out things count for most and they are usually not even expensive. Roses are good oh, but.... abeg, na chop I go chop am?
Ahh romance, thanks for the memories.
Wow, uh, it sounds like an ad a desperate guy wud put in a magazine or somn..im no cynic, but then....
Oh yea, chari is one hell of a romantic guy, theres still hope for nigerian men..lol..
Ummm, shona, those sandals ought to have reached u by now! I mean, wth??
Hi Shona Vixen,
Hope you don't mind, I am doing the rounds and decided to pop in at yours. I like what I read. Pouring out your heart is what its all about.
As per Romance, well, wifey thinks its about giving surprises - restaurant, gifts, films, etc. I know I haven't done a lot of that lately, man must put food 4 table 1st now, abi?
Hope to see you at my end. Have a fab day.
lol " afrobabe.
romance could be anything we make it...from the most insignificant of things to the very wow thing that blows the core centre of our existence.
i wouldnt say i'm romantic...maybe i am, maybe not, but who knows...who cares.
its what i make of it at a time:)
bite me i've just blabbed:)
fantasy queen!
and i wouldnt be so crazy as to touch that basket...one of the 101 things to do before i'm old and broring is leave a msg in a bottle...
in nigeria i would neither leave one of retrieve on, with all the withcraft floating around..lol
i find it romantic when he rubs my should as he says good bye...to check that i'm ok...i love it that we have conversations without saying a word… I love it that he reaches out and holds my hand in the car and squeezes it gently and won't let go...i love it when i dancing close to him, that he holds my waist exerting the slightly pressure so i know he doesn't want me leave him...
now if he could just open his mouth and bloody say it...then i would be in heaven...
p.s
how are you dearie? how was your exam?
pp.s
sorry about my post y'sterday...might not have made sense cos i think i had just about decided to reconstruct it and change it to a sex and lies story when you read it...it is sorted now
lmao SHona, just watched the obama video again....... hehehe
how r u hun?
Oh Shona! seeing this again puts a smile on my face.
Gosh...Life's just weird.
I have so many. One of the things I enjoyed most was running a hot bubble bath for my GF and washing her hair for her. Noone had ever done that before.
